Rogue lite, > 60fps

I had multiple ideas for new games since last year, but they requested lots of updates on my game engine, and I didn’t have the time and energy to do that. It was quite a bummer and I didn’t make much progress.

So lately I began thinking about a new game idea that would require much less update on my game engine, so that I could focus more on the game itself and less on the engine running it : a rogue lite. I still want to work on my own engine, I love that, but I prefer doing small updates on existing features.

It will take inspiration on my favorite rogue likes, and for example the level layout will be inspired by The Binding of Isaac with rooms you have to clear before going to the next one.

I made a small prototype of the room layout and camera work, it’s just an example to see if it could work :

I have been reusing assets from Alien Blitz, but it’s just some place holders to test my ideas, the new game will have new : textures, monsters, sprites, UI, lighting,….

On the technical side some updates :

  • The engine now supports more any refresh rate, I have tested 120/144 fps on my monitor, which makes the game really smooth (I could not find how to save the video at such a frame rate using OBS, so the above video is limited to 60 fps)
  • Some work / optimization on lighting, the colors should be a lot more vibrant now
  • And of course everything is still smooth, stable 60fps, on my “reference” : the Steam Deck
